Coprinus comatus - The vital mushroom for diabetes

March 14, 2021
Dr. Dorothee Bös et al.

The edible mushroom Coprinus comatus, native to Germany, is an effective natural remedy for diabetes. Its use in case of too high as well as strongly fluctuating blood sugar levels is part of the traditional healing knowledge of Central Europe.

Learn here how Coprinus can help your metabolism and even relieve digestive discomfort.

Coprinus comatus: traditional vital mushroom of Central Europe

The medicinal mushroom Coprinus comatus has its original home in Central Europe. Here he feels comfortable and can be found in many places. However, it is also sometimes found in other areas of the northern hemisphere. Coprinus thrives best in fertile meadows with low grass and in forests. It is one of the few mushrooms that are relatively common to come across even in front yards, parks and other manicured green spaces. As an exceptional edible mushroom, it caught the attention of people in Central Europe hundreds of years ago. It has a long tradition as a tasty edible mushroom as well as a helpful vital mushroom. Especially its positive effect on digestion and against metabolic diseases is highly valued in alternative medicine. Unfortunately, the Coprinus is not storable at all. After collection, the vital mushroom must be processed immediately. Otherwise, it melts into a black, ink-like liquid. It owes its German second name “Schopftintling” to this characteristic.

How do I support my health with the Coprinus?

If you want to take advantage of the many health benefits that the crested pintling brings, please pay close attention to your collection area. Coprinus is often contaminated with environmental toxins, especially at sites near cities. However, occasional mushroom meals are not enough for a significant effect on your well-being anyway. For example, if you want to permanently control your blood sugar, you need to take capsules with powder from the dried vital mushroom every day. Since the Coprinus is easy to breed, you can find various suppliers for this purpose. When making your choice, make sure that true quality mushrooms can only thrive under organic guidelines.

Why is the Coprinus so healthy?

Special medically active ingredients

Researchers have identified comatin as one of the most important bioactive substances in crested thistle. It is mainly responsible for the antidiabetic properties of Coprinus. Thus, it can lower blood glucose levels and also prevent the harmful glycosylation of proteins, which is responsible for late diabetic damage.

However, alternative medicine not only takes advantage of the effect of comatin on our metabolism. The following ingredients of the medicinal mushroom also play an important role in mycotherapy:Fresh corinus mushroom shot on white background

  • Lectins
  • Flavonoids
  • Tocopherol
  • L-Ergothionein
  • Polysaccharides, especially the fucogalactan
  • Beta-glucans and chitin

Polysaccharides such as chitin and beta-glucans in particular have been repeatedly proven in new studies to have a positive influence on the human immune system, metabolism and digestion. They are found in all fungi in varying amounts and chemical structures.

Micro and macronutrients

Like other mushrooms, Coprinus is characterized by a healthy variety of nutrients. Thus, in its dry matter there are more than 50% carbohydrates and dietary fiber, which include polysaccharides. Furthermore, the vital mushroom consists of a maximum of 25% protein and less than 5% fat. The fiber contained promotes healthy intestinal flora and can thus prevent constipation as well as diarrhea. In addition, the intestinal flora plays an important role in connection with weight regulation, inflammatory processes and metabolism. From the high protein content derives, above all, a high nutritional value. It contains over 20 different amino acids. The protein from the vital mushroom is also well utilizable for our body. Even the fat from the crested pineapple contributes its share to our well-being: Unsaturated fatty acids account for around two-thirds. Among other things, they are essential for our nerves and blood vessels. Furthermore, the Coprinus has the following secondary plant substances and trace elements, among others:
  • Polyphenols
  • Laccase
  • Phosphorus
  • Potassium
  • Magnesium
  • Sodium
  • Calcium
They all play an important role for our organism. While potassium is essential for the function of our cells and magnesium for the work of nerves and heart, polyphenols have antioxidant, anti-inflammatory and regulating effects on blood pressure. In terms of microelements, the crested pinot is particularly rich in iron, zinc and manganese. Our body needs iron for the red blood cells. Zinc helps our immune system and manganese is needed to provide energy and build connective tissue and bones.

The wide range of effects of Coprinus on our health

In alternative medicine, Coprinus is the drug of choice for diabetes for several reasons. Here it has proven itself many times and has already been able to help many people overcome the disease. However, the crested apple has many other health-promoting properties that can benefit not only diabetics, but also people with other diseases. In the literature and relevant studies, scientists mention the following effects of Coprinus, among others:
  • antioxidant
  • antitumoral
  • anti-inflammatory
  • antimicrobial
  • pancreas protective
  • liver protective
Here we present the central areas of action of the vital mushroom for you. In doing so, we draw on several hundred years of experience in alternative medicine as well as current research in the field of medicine.

EXPERIENCE REPORTS
"For many years I had diabetes, high blood pressure and gout. I was in very bad shape despite many medications. My last hope was mushrooms and they really helped me."

The natural remedy for diabetes

Even though diabetes type 2 is a so-called “widespread disease” that affects more and more people, it has been known to healers for a long time. Corresponding symptoms were already described in antiquity and the disease was recognized as such almost 2000 years ago. In Europe, healers finally discovered the vital mushroom Coprinus, which they used to alleviate the suffering of their diabetes patients. To this day, it is considered the most important medicinal mushroom for diabetes mellitus. In the former GDR, for example, it was regularly used against diabetes. While juvenile type 1 diabetes is often genetically predisposed and similar to late-onset diabetes 1 (LADA) autoimmune in origin, type 2 develops primarily from excessive consumption of high-fat diets, 3-D illustration of a scale showing high diabetes valuesanimal products, and processed foods. Fatty acids and cholesterol accumulate in muscle cells, reducing energy production and leading to insulin resistance. They also damage the islet cells in the pancreas. Insulin, which is indispensable for the utilization of sugar, is formed in them. The more the pancreas is affected, the worse the islet cells work, the more difficult it becomes for the organism to control blood glucose levels. However, while insulin is produced in ever decreasing amounts, more and more insulin is needed to get the same amount of sugar into the cells. A vicious circle takes its course. Diabetics are often advised to pay attention to so-called bread units when eating, especially of course when insulin has to be injected. However, much more important than the carbohydrate content or bread units is the quality and composition of the food. A meal that is very plant-based and rich in fiber and vital nutrients will hardly cause sugar to rise, despite the carbohydrates. Therefore, it is important to pay attention to the type of food. Meals with legumes – especially beans – or mushrooms and lots of raw vegetables are particularly effective against diabetes. Diabetics should also always be on the lookout for digestive disorders, as one in two diabetics will suffer from pancreatic insufficiency at some point. In addition to pancreatic insufficiency, diabetes can also cause damage to all organs and tissues, if only because of the circulatory disturbances that always occur. For example, on the kidneys and eyes, the cardiovascular system, trigger dementia and polyneuropathies, weaken the immune system and massively increase the risk of cancer. The reasons to fight diabetes, and in the best case to cure it completely, are therefore numerous. Exactly here our vital mushroom, the Schopftintling performs excellent services.

Lower and stabilize blood sugar

A key goal in the treatment of diabetes is to lower blood glucose and prevent severe fluctuations. This is exactly what the Coprinus is able to do. However, unlike conventional drugs, it does not cause any side effects. You cannot overdose it and it will not harm your body even if you take it for a long time. In the process, researchers found that glucose levels can drop within a short time of ingesting the crested pineapple. After 2 weeks of regular use, they even observed a very significant decrease in glucose levels, and after about 6 weeks, a reduced long-term value is often detectable. Researchers attribute a central role in the regulation of sugar metabolism to the comatin contained in the vital mushroom. Thus, it is able to effectively stabilize blood sugar in diabetics. As a result, the likelihood of food cravings also decreases and the feeling of fullness lasts longer. Therefore, the Coprinus is also perfect for weight loss. For people suffering from diabetes, the improvement of the quality of life and the lower risk of consequential damage are of course of primary importance.

Improvements in glucose metabolism

Doctors believe that one of the reasons for stable blood sugar is that insulin resistance is reduced and therefore more sugar can be burned. At the same time, the pancreas gradually regenerates while taking Coprinus. The islet cells produce more insulin again. When too much sugar circulates freely in the blood, the risk of protein saccharification increases. Experts call this “glycosylation.” These candied protein structures pose a major threat to arteries and capillaries. They can injure them, leading to the notorious circulatory problems associated with diabetes. Doctors often measure the glucose level of hemoglobin (glycohemoglobin), the red blood pigment, as an indicator of blood glucose levels over the past two to three months. At the same time, it provides information about possible complications resulting from diabetes. It is precisely this long-term blood glucose value (HbA1c value) that also goes down when Coprinus comatus is taken. The risk of long-term consequences and an increasing deterioration of the state of health thus decreases significantly thanks to the vital mushroom.

Control diabetes and weight

As we have already addressed, type 2 diabetes is primarily caused by the intake of too much fat and processed foods. That is why weight loss is at the forefront of any diabetes treatment. Close up of a person on a scale, in the foreground is a tape measureIn particular, abdominal fat must be tackled. But once the body’s cells and liver are fatty, losing weight is nearly impossible. A fatty liver blocks the entire metabolism, while the fat in the muscle cells hinders the work of the mitochondria, our little power plants. The production of energy by burning nutrients is thus slow. Here, again, the crested thintling comes into play because, together with the mushroom maitake, it can prevent the storage of fat in the body cells. At the same time, people who regularly consume Coprinus usually experience a decrease in total cholesterol and triglycerides in the blood. All these effects prevent further obesity and actively support weight loss. To test this effect, scientists administered Coprinus to people who were consistently gaining weight. Although the subjects did not change their diet, they did not continue to gain weight due to the medicinal mushroom. A control group, which received no vital mushroom, brought however steadily more on the balance. The conclusions from this remarkable effect is that the Coprinus significantly improves the utilization of glucose in the body. It also appears to suppress the expression of genes responsible for fat formation.

Prevention of secondary damage caused by diabetes

Even people suffering from advanced diabetes can benefit from the medicinal mushroom. In this way, it also protects the islet cells from extending existing damage. In a study on mice, this effect could be clearly reproduced. Under the administration of Coprinus, no more islet cells died and those that were already damaged regenerated at least partially. In addition, Coprinus has many different healthy substances that generally help the organism repair diabetes-related damage. These include, for example, antioxidants, which counteract the increased release of free radicals in the bodies of diabetics. In addition, the vital mushroom contains anti-inflammatory substances, which in turn reduce the risk of serious secondary diseases such as blindness, circulatory disorders, amputations and kidney failure.

Comprehensive treatment approach for type 1 and type 2 diabetes

While the crested thistle is a powerful companion in the fight against diabetes, you can increase its effectiveness many times over if you take other simple measures. Fundamental in any case is the change of diet to a balanced and wholesome plant-based diet, which helps protect against late damage in any type and has a blood sugar stabilizing effect. Regular exercise should also be integrated into your daily routine, especially after meals. If you suffer from type 1 diabetes, it is also recommended to additionally take the medicinal mushroom ABM. It has a balancing effect on the immune system and can reduce the absorption of sugar in the intestine. For type 2 diabetes, we usually recommend a combination of Coprinus and Maitake. For its part, the vital mushroom Maitake has a positive effect on fat metabolism and also increases the sensitivity of insulin receptors on the cells. In many cases, type 2 diabetes can even be completely cured within a few weeks. How this supposed miracle can become reality, you will learn in the book “Dr. Barnard’s revolutionary method against diabetes” Cure diabetes without drugs – scientifically proven. You can find it right here in our store.

Coprinus as a supporter of digestion

Like other medicinal mushrooms, Coprinus Close up of slim woman with belly top - in front of belly she holds a note with laughing smiley facecomatus improves the intestinal flora. This benefits overall health, the immune system and, of course, digestion itself. In one study, researchers gave mice polysaccharides from Coprinus. They administered them to both healthy mice and those that suffered from liver damage as a result of alcohol consumption. In both study groups, they observed a significant improvement in the intestinal environment.

From time immemorial, alternative medicine has used the crested thistle for digestive problems. It is commonly considered to be antispasmodic as well as stool regulating. In traditional Chinese medicine, it helps patients suffering from constipation and hemorrhoids. While a combination with the vital mushroom Maitake is recommended for diarrhea, Auricularia should be administered as a supplement for constipation. However, if you suffer from leaky gut or inflammation in the digestive tract, we usually recommend Hericium and Reishi for optimal treatment success.

The crested pintle and the cancer cells

In cancer research, researchers are constantly turning to remedies from nature to examine their effectiveness 3D illustration of cancer cells on blue backgroundand ingredients in fighting cancer cells. Thus, they also repeatedly deal with the effect of Coprinus on tumors. Within the framework of scientific experiments, an inhibiting effect of the vital mushroom on the growth of malignant tumors in the connective and supporting tissue could be observed. Recent observations even give scientists hope for a therapeutic effect in leukemia. Furthermore, researchers found an inhibitory effect of Coprinus on both hormone-dependent and -independent cell cultures of prostate and breast cancer. Unfortunately, these effects cannot be directly transferred from the petri dish to the human body, but they impressively demonstrate the power of the fungus and provide clues for further research approaches in the field of cancer therapy. The focus is on laccase from Coprinus, which arguably plays an important role in curbing liver and breast cancer. It appears to exert its inhibitory influence on tumors via kappa B.

Anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties

As we have already mentioned in connection with the consequential damages of diabetes, the Coprinus has strong antioxidant properties. Its intake increases the level of glutathione peroxidase, superoxide dismutase and catalase in the body. As a result, the risk of damage caused by oxygen free radicals to the DNA of our body cells decreases. In terms of anti-inflammatory properties, scientists identified at least two different groups of substances, each of which can improve the body’s overall inflammatory levels in a different way. Thus, the triglycerides from the vital mushroom mainly affect the pro-inflammatory factors TNF-alpha, interleukin 1 beta, interleukin 17 and vascular endothelial growth factor. In contrast, the polysaccharides reduced the levels of interleukin 6, inducible nitric oxide synthase, and cyclooxigenase. Inflammation is particularly common in people who are already in poor health. In turn, they can result in unpleasant secondary diseases that are far more difficult to treat than the original inflammation. That is why possible foci of inflammation should always be contained as early as possible.

Coprinus protects our nerves

Experience shows that Coprinus even has neuroprotective properties. It therefore contains substances that protect our nerves. This effect once again benefits diabetics, who are at increased risk for polyneuropathies. In addition, the sensation of pain may be reduced by taking Coprinus. 3-D illustration of neural network and nerve tracts A remarkable finding in this context concerns the degenerative brain disease Alzheimer’s disease. By acting as an antioxidant and also shutting down the work of acetylcholinesterase in the body, Coprinus can slow down the degenerative process and alleviate the symptoms associated with dementia.

Where can I get Coprinus comatus?

As we mentioned at the beginning, it is possible to collect the Schopftintling yourself in Germany without any problems and we would like to give you a few hints for collecting and processing the Schopftintling here. However, due to its short shelf life and the relatively low health effect of an occasional mushroom dish, we prefer the use of professionally prepared powder from the vital mushroom for alternative medical purposes.

Coprinus comatus collect

In our latitudes you can find the tasty medicinal mushroom between April and November, as long as it is humid enough. When collecting, you should focus on the young specimens of Coprinus. Recording of Coprinus mushrooms growing in natureThey can be recognized by their white color with a slightly brownish tip. The hats are egg-shaped and have a smooth edge at the bottom. Once the hat begins to open into a bell, the lower edge becomes fringed, and the color changes to pink to brown-black, you should not take the mushroom.

Basically, you should only pick mushrooms if you are completely sure or have an experienced mushroom expert by your side!

What do I have to pay attention to during processing?

Immediately after collecting, remove the white, bulbous stem, which has a small ring of skin halfway up. At home, the Coprinus should then also be prepared and consumed immediately. Otherwise, autolysis will beat you to it. This is a process in which the fungus dissolves itself to spread its spores. It does this in the wild over the course of days to weeks. However, after harvesting, the process begins almost immediately. But the rush is worth it in any case. Coprinus is also popularly called “asparagus mushroom” due to its delicate texture and delicious aroma. In fact, it is related to one of the most popular edible mushrooms, the mushroom. Therefore, when it was first classified in 1780, it was erroneously given the biological name “Agaricus comatus”, where the Agaricus refers to the genus of mushrooms. However, the relationship is not that close, which is why the name was corrected about 20 years later.

Coprinus comatus buy

To counteract or prevent health complaints, the local consumption of fresh mushrooms is not sufficient. In addition, important ingredients are destroyed during preparation. If you want to achieve the positive effects on health described here, you should resort to mushroom powder. Only in this way will you actually consume all the ingredients that will help you in the way described above. The best way to keep the mushroom powder is in a capsule, as this protects it from moisture and mold growth, as well as from unwanted contact with oxygen.

What should I look for in mushroom capsules?

When choosing a producer, make sure that the cultivation is done according to organic guidelines. Since mushrooms take in all the substances that are harmful to the environment, they would end up with you, the consumer. Therefore, chemicals or even poisons have no place in the cultivation of mushrooms. We recommend buying mushroom powder from German cultivation, because here the strictest organic guidelines apply. In addition, gentle drying is essential to preserve the high-quality ingredients.

For mushroom powders there are many suppliers

You will find trustworthy suppliers with controlled organic cultivation in Germany, but unfortunately also less recommendable importers of cheap goods. Read what is important when buying.
